Are all Government of Yukon employment opportunities posted to this site?

Yes. They are also posted on the Job Information Board in our main administration building at 2071 2nd Avenue in Whitehorse. (map)

Are all Government of Yukon positions open to the public?

No, not all of them. Our competitions fall under two categories:

Jobs Open to Government of Yukon Employees: These competitions are restricted to people who already work for the Yukon public service, and sometimes to those working within a particular department or branch.

Jobs Open to the Public: Anyone who has the legal right to live and work in Canada may apply to these competitions.

How often are the job postings updated?

This site and all of our government job boards are updated as soon as positions become available.

How do I apply for a position listed here?

See our How to Apply page for information on applying and tips on submitting your best application. You may also want to attend one of our free information sessions for applicants.

What types of jobs are there in the Yukon public service?

As many as there are ways your government can serve you. Our people are in tourism, healthcare, education, finance, resource management, environmental research, business development, policy-making, social work, wilderness preservation, communications, administration—you name it. Learn about our departments to get a sense of the range of our operations.

Are all of your jobs located in Whitehorse?

No—we have offices and staff in communities all across Yukon. Read more about our communities.

Are all jobs within the Government of Yukon permanent and full-time?

No, we have several different job categories. These include:
Permanent: These are ongoing staff positions without an end date. They may be full or part time, and they include an attractive benefits package.

Term: Term positions come with the same benefits as permanent positions, but the jobs last a set period of time; for example, 6 or 12 months. After this pre-determined period the positions end, though in some cases they may be renewed.

Auxiliary on-call: These are posted on an as-needed basis to cover absences due to things like illness or vacations, or for periods of heavy workload. These employees receive extra pay in lieu of benefits.

Seasonal auxiliary: These seasonal positions last anywhere from 3 to 10 months. Seasonal employees are normally called back to work at the same time each year.

Casual: These are short-term positions that last less than a 6-month period and which will not be renewed. Casual employees are not bargaining unit members and so do not receive benefits.

How much do Government of Yukon positions pay?

Our employees receive a very competitive salary and benefits package, along with annual travel bonus payments and, in some cases, extra cost of living bonuses and tax incentives.

What is the nature of the hiring process?

Our selection process is based on the merit principle—that is, candidates are assessed according to the requirements of the position and are selected beginning with the most qualified person. Because we are committed to a public service that reflects the population we serve, some positions may be listed as Preferential or Restricted to particular groups.

The Government of Yukon is committed to developing a public service that reflects the population we serve, so some postings may give preference or be restricted to a particular group (such as people of First Nations ancestry or people with disabilities). Everyone is welcome to apply to competitions listed as Preferential, though qualified applicants from the preferential group will be considered first. For Restricted postings, only those qualified applicants meeting the criteria will be considered. Contact us if you have questions about Preferential or Restricted hiring.

Do you have special staffing programs for people of First Nations ancestry or people with disabilities?

The WDEO also offers training, support and special application and staffing accommodations to people with disabilities.

Can you help people on social assistance find work experience within the Government of Yukon?

Yes, we can help eligible applicants find paid temporary work-experience placements through our Head Start program.

Do any positions require the use of the French language?

There is a thriving Francophone community in Yukon, and some positions may require fluency in both English and French. In these cases, selected applicants will undergo an oral and/or written test for language proficiency. However, as English is the administrative language of work in Government of Yukon, resumes and applications must be submitted in English.
