Surficial Geologist

Salary : $72,036 to $83,278 per annum

This competition is for a full-time term position to March 2011.

The Surficial Geologist is responsible for conducting original scientific research for the branch by planning and carrying out detailed surficial deposit and permafrost mapping of assigned areas, compiling permafrost, surficial and climate data in areas of Yukon Government infrastructure, coordinating laboratory and other studies, synthesizing and interpreting the results, preparing geological reports and maps for publication and poster and oral presentations.

If this opportunity interests you, please submit your resume clearly indicating your M.Sc. degree in physical geography, geology or a related field with specialization in tertiary or quaternary fluvial sedimentology, geomorphology or permafrost, combined with experience in:

• Undertaking field mapping and laboratory work, preferably in northwestern Canada
• Supervising field personnel
• Using computer applications, including databases and desktop mapping.

Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in physical geography, geology or a related field of study combined with considerable experience in the above will also be considered.

Condition(s) of Employment: Valid Class 5 driver’s license and pre-employment medical clearance.

Job Requirement(s): Willingness to travel within Yukon.

A one year eligibility list will be established from this competition to fill future vacancies for identical positions and may also be used for similar positions within the department.
